Harry Maguire not at the level to be Manchester United captain claims ex-teammate

Ahmed Elmohamady has slammed former teammate Harry Maguire for his sloppy displays, claiming the defender cannot handle the pressure at Manchester United.

Harry Maguire has come in for tremendous criticism for some sloppy performances this season. Some of his below-par displays have been costly as Manchester United have dropped valuable points in the context of the top-four race.

The English defender has not put in a consistent run of performances, although he does come up with a good display every now and then. However, considering he is the world’s costliest defender after Manchester United paid a record-breaking £80 million for his services a few years ago, better outings are naturally expected of him.

Some have suggested Manchester United should sell the defender and cut their losses with the English international. His displays at the heart of the Manchester United defence have been abysmal in many important games this season, and certainly not at the level and status of the Red Devils.

Other off-field issues have transpired, while doubts were raised over his captaincy, with some suggesting he be stripped of it. However, Ralf Rangnick rubbished those suggestions and has continued to back the club captain.

However, one of Maguire’s former teammates at Hull City, Ahmed Elmohamady, has suggested the defender cannot cope with the pressure at Manchester United. The former Aston Villa defender’s comments appeared on The Sun, as he insisted that the English defender is not fit to lead Manchester United.

Elmohamady said, “Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the Manchester United captain. Man United need a player with a strong personality, and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays. Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure.”

“However, Maguire can’t handle this pressure. So I think that the pressure he has by wearing the captain’s armband is affecting his performances. Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League, and maybe this is his level. He doesn’t have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England.”

Despite the rampant criticism of his performances, Ralf Rangnick has stuck by his captain, even though he has dropped the Englishman on the odd occasion. But with the pressure ramping up on him, only time will tell if Maguire’s days as the Manchester United captain are numbered.
