Giorgi Mamardashvili is not deterred by the challenge posed by Alisson Becker next season, as he’s ready to fight for his place at Liverpool.
Liverpool had a quiet summer, making only one outfield signing, Federico Chiesa from Juventus. The Merseysiders took an opportunity with the Italian attacker, who had a year left on his deal, and signed him for a bargain price.
Fans were disgruntled by the lack of activity during the summer, but Liverpool did make another signing. They signed goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia by paying hefty fees, as the goalkeeper remains one of the highest-rated stoppers in La Liga.
His performances for Georgia at the Euros might have contributed to Liverpool’s interest, although his decision to sign for them did raise a few eyebrows. The prospect of dethroning Alisson Becker will always be a tough challenge for even the most formidable keepers around the world, as the Georgian is open to the challenge.
In Fabrizio Romano’s post on X, Mamardashvili’s comments appeared to suggest he’s still determined by the prospect of challenging Alisson for a place. His words did not show any fear for the Liverpool first-team mainstay, as he is not banking on the Brazilian leaving next season and instead welcomed the competition.
Mamardashvili said, “I was attracted by Liverpool’s project when the club’s representatives met me to sign me. I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team”.
Next summer, Liverpool will face a tricky situation with their goalkeepers as Kaoimhim Kelleher will likely look for a departure to play regularly elsewhere. Meanwhile, the arrival of Mamardashvili does make Liverpool’s goalkeeping department the strongest of all teams in the Premier League, but they might consider selling Alisson for big money.
With a long-term contract in place for the Brazilian, Liverpool are expecting offers for the Brazilian, with a host of sides keen on the stopper. Bayern Munich are eager to bring him as a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer, and that could be an option, especially if Arne Slot makes it clear that Mamardashvili will be their new No.1.
Saudi clubs are also keen, but Alisson displayed in the summer that he was not overly eager to make the switch to the Middle East, as he might prefer to stay in Europe. For now, he might have no plans to leave Liverpool either, as Mamardashvili’s words about the competition might come to fruition.
