Gerard Pique has spoken up about the prospect of potentially leaving Barcelona, insisting he will leave when he cannot contribute to the team.
In an interview with Spanish outlet La Sotana, as quoted by Tribal Football, Gerard Pique has talked about his career so far at Barcelona as well as the prospect of potentially moving away from the club in the future. And the veteran defender said that he will leave the club when he cannot contribute to the team’s cause.
Pique has been one of the stalwarts for Barcelona since his return from Manchester United in the summer of 2008. Initially groomed by Carles Puyol, the former Spanish international forged a solid partnership with the ex-Barcelona captain before becoming a senior defender himself.
In the last few years, though, it has appeared as if age is starting to catch up to him, with fitness issues starting to crop up. The 34-year-old is currently struggling with an injury as well, although he remains a key player for Barcelona and one of the few leaders following the departure of Lionel Messi.
Pique is also someone the youngsters look up to, with Eric Garcia claiming he hopes to emulate the veteran defender upon returning to Barcelona himself. Now, Pique has commented on his future and if he can ever leave Barcelona before he retires.
Speaking to La Sotana (h/t Tribal Football), the Barcelona veteran said, “The first year I made my debut, when the sun was shining brighter than anything, if I had been told that at 34 I would play for Barcelona, I would not have given a single penny.”
“I knew how to deal with the times when my body needed such a thing. Family stability is also essential. I go from season to season. I always see it as the last one, if there is another one then that’s perfect. The day I see that I cannot give the team what I have given, I leave.”

Fair play to Pique, he knows where he stands and at a time when Barcelona need to make some major progress to return to their pomp, the 34-year-old will hold the key with his performances at the back, and it remains to be seen if he can prolong his stay at Camp Nou with solid displays.
