Gary Pallister gives backing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Gary Pallister is convinced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has come under increasing pressure to deliver trophies at Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is widely considered the right man to take Manchester United forward after the ill-fated managerial reigns of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Since taking over from the Portuguese in December 2018, the Norwegian has steered the club in the right direction and built expectations.

Last season’s second-placed finish in the Premier League is seen as progress, despite their struggles in the Champions League and Europa League. Solskjaer’s men finished third in their Champions League group and got ousted by Villareal in the Europa League final on penalties.

Solskjaer has failed to win a single trophy in his two and a half years at the club, and the pressure seems to be mounting to deliver trophies. However, this summer, Manchester United made some smart recruitments in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, making them challengers on all fronts. In July, Solskjaer also signed a new three-year deal, to continue his reign.

Yet, Manchester United were condemned to an untimely defeat in their opening Champions League game to Young Boys, although their Premier League campaign has gotten off to a flying start. The pressure will firmly be on the Norwegian to deliver trophies, while many believe this season’s success will determine his future.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Pallister is backing Solskjaer to deliver on his promise at the club. Speaking exclusively to Tribal Football, Pallister understood the Manchester United manager’s pressure but backed him to take the club to the next level and deliver trophies.

Pallister said, “We hear that every year and we all thought he would get that one in the final against Villarreal. I think if we improve on last year and edge closer to the title, then I think that can be seen as an improvement.”

“But the demands are very high at Manchester United, and they haven’t won enough trophies in recent years. I’m sure Ole feels the pressure of that, but I will say this is the closest we’ve been to a Manchester United I recognise since Sir Alex left.”

“He’s trying to bring in an exciting and attacking brand of football that is associated with Manchester United and has been missing for quite a while. I hope the club has patience with him and that he can see the job through.”

Solskjaer can have no excuses for failure this season, especially after their huge outlays in the transfer window. The Manchester United manager has the right players and a balanced squad to challenge on all fronts but should improve his record against in clutch fixtures to dream of trophies this season.
