Arsenal put in one of their performances of the season as they ran riot over Sunderland, winning 4-1. Alexis Sanchez and super-sub Olivier Giroud both recorded braces as the Gunners ended the day as table toppers.
However, French midfielder Francis Coquelin was heavily under scrutiny for his overall showing in the game. Due to the absence of Santi Cazorla and Granit Xhaka, the Arsenal midfield had a makeshift look, featuring Mohamed Elneny alongside the Frenchman.
But with both being holding midfielders, the duo struggled in alternating the holding and box-to-box roles between the two. Coquelin managed to find himself with the sight of goal on a number of occasions but did nothing to trouble the opposition defence. He also made a number of cynical challenges and was duly a topic for discussion on social media.
Take a look:
Coquelin’s life flashed before him as he ran through on goal.

I got so excited about how bad “Coquelin one on one with the keeper” was going to turn out, and boy, I was not disappointed

Coquelin officially slower than Per.

How did Coquelin end up the furthest Arsenal player then?
— Ibypatel (@Ibypatel) October 29, 2016
Coquelin through one on one, there was never any other outcome.

IT’S COQUELIN…PUT THROUGH BY ALEXIS… OHHH WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT?! Throw in.

I can already see a frustrating 1st half. El Neny – Coquelin should never be on the pitch together unless we’re 4-0 up. Or protecting a lead

What minute will coquelin get his stupid yellow card today?
— Sam (@IwobiFlick) October 29, 2016
I imagine that Coquelin walks around his house tackling tables, chairs, sofas and the mrs. Edward Scissor Legs

Sometimes I think Coquelin is a genius, other times I think he’s braindead.

Coquelin gives away more fouls than every player in the history of football put together. #SUNARS #AFC

LOOOOOOOL I thought that was going top bins. Coquelin was about to get it
