Everton 1-0 Arsenal: Wasteful Gunners suffer blow to top four hopes [Tweets]

An early Phil Jagielka goal condemned Arsenal to a narrow defeat at Goodison Park which also dealt a blow to their top four hopes.

Arsenal lost ground to other rivals in the top four race after suffering in yet another away game, this time to Everton. The Toffees, apart from an early goal by Phil Jagielka, were also the better side throughout 90 minutes. The result meant Arsenal were unable to take back the third spot from Tottenham and raised some serious doubts over their top four credentials.

The Gunners looked weak in every position against Everton, with only Bernd Leno performing well. Arsenal’s defenders, midfielders and attackers all lost their respective battles and ensured a lacklustre performance.

In particular, fans were keen to point out several things in the aftermath of Arsenal’s defeat, including their thoughts on Mesut Ozil, who was sorely ineffective on the day and was accused of going invisible in the final third. There were some words of choice for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The main focus, however, was Arsenal and what looked like a chance to get a grip on the top four race, something that the side missed out. Defenders and midfielders were those who came in for scrutiny.
