Barcelona’s summer signing Eric Garcia has confessed that he hopes to emulate teammate Gerard Pique at Camp Nou in the years to come.
Eric Garcia is here and raring to go after making a decent enough debut for Barcelona last week against Real Sociedad. Now, in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, the 20-year-old Spanish international has confessed that he is hoping to emulate Gerard Pique at Camp Nou in the years to come.
Asked how he has felt with everything going by quickly, the former Manchester City defender said, “The truth is that everything has been very fast and I did not expect to play the game against Real Sociedad, but I am very grateful for the confidence that the coach has given me.”
Garcia then went to speak about realising his Barcelona dream while also making a confession, adding, “Debuting at Barcelona is always a dream, it was the first league game and also the day that people returned to the Camp Nou, so it was a very special game for me.”
“Hopefully in a few years I can say that I have had the career that Gerard Piqué has had and has, he has been and is one of the best center-backs there has been. Playing alongside him and learning from him in training is incredible.”
Garcia is touted to be the long-term successor to Pique at Barcelona, with the former Spanish international now into the twilight of his career. At the same time, the Catalan giants are also intent on signing a second centre-back this summer, as they first look to offload Samuel Umtiti.
Barcelona have been linked with a number of left-footed centre-backs, including Alessio Romagnoli and a few others. However, for now, the focus remains on getting several unwanted players to go some way in balancing their books and remain afloat.
As for Garcia, his start at Barcelona has been quite solid to say the least, and he will now hope to continue settling in while learning the ropes from Pique. What remains to be seen, though, is whether the 20-year-old can indeed emulate his senior teammate in the years to come.
