Emiliano Martinez is happy and content at Aston Villa amid his links with Serie A club Inter Milan and Juventus this summer.
As quoted by Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Gustavo Goni has commented on Emiliano Martinez’s long-term future. Inter Milan and Juventus have shown interest in the 33-year-old Aston Villa goalkeeper, but a summer departure is not on the cards for the veteran shot-stopper.
Goni said, “It is normal that big clubs are interested in signing one of the best ‘keepers in the world – but Martinez will only leave with the blessing of Villa and under a deal that suits all parties.”
How has Emiliano Martinez fared at Aston Villa?
Emiliano Martinez has established himself as one of the world’s most accomplished goalkeepers since joining Aston Villa from Arsenal in a deal worth £17 million in September 2020. The 33-year-old, a backup stopper for the North London club, has made considerable progress in the last half a dozen years, having become a mainstay between the sticks for his club and country while enjoying tremendous success in international football.
The Argentine international has made over 250 appearances for Aston Villa thus far while keeping 80 clean sheets and conceding 305 goals. Meanwhile, Martinez’s exploits have provoked interest from several high-profile clubs, with Inter Milan and Juventus among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Serie A adventure on the horizon?
Inter Milan’s interest in Emiliano Martinez has been understandable. The Serie A champions scoured the market for a goalkeeper for several weeks, as Yann Sommer has departed from San Siro as a free agent. However, with Ivan Provedel joining the Nerazzurri, Cristian Chivu has two goalkeepers for the 2026/27 season and will not push the club to sign another stopper.
As for Juventus, Luciano Spalletti has reportedly been eager to land an upgrade on Michele Di Gregorio, and the Serie A giants have had their sights set on several goalkeepers. While Martinez was a top target for the Bianconeri, the talks to sign the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner recently hit an impasse and forced them to call off the move.
With Martinez happy at Aston Villa and raring to go for the upcoming campaign, the Serie A clubs had little chance of securing his signature. The Villans can now rest easy in the knowledge that they will not lose another key player this summer after seeing Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans depart earlier in the window.
