Diego Forlan comments on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United return

Former Manchester United great Diego Forlan has offered his thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo’s fabled return to Old Trafford.

In an interview with Marca, Diego Forlan has commented on Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent return to Manchester United. He has hailed his former club, claiming that a return to Old Trafford was the best option for the former Real Madrid icon.

Highly regarded as one of the legends of South American football, Forlan was teammates with Ronaldo during their time together at Old Trafford at the start of the 21st century. The revered forward did not remain at Manchester long, though, making a little under 100 appearances before joining Villarreal in 2004.

Forlan’s stint in England wasn’t particularly joyous, but the Uruguayan believes that a return to Manchester United for his former teammate Ronaldo was an ideal move.

Tribal Football has recently published excerpts of his interview with Marca, where Forlan hailed the club as well as the Portuguese international.

“I think he chose very well. Manchester is his home, where he really began his career in the elite and where he also won everything. I think Cristiano has made a great choice. At Old Trafford they will surely receive him for what he is: an idol.”, he told Marca.

Forlan is currently managing Uruguayan outfit CA Atenas, and even had a small stint with Penarol last season. His managerial career is yet to yield much success, but the forward is certainly happy for his former club to have captured a star like Ronaldo.

“I am very happy about his signing and hopefully, with his return, United will return to the elite, where they were before.”, he added.

Forlan’s comments come just a day before Cristiano Ronaldo made his second debut for Manchester United, during Saturday’s home game against Newcastle. The 36-year-old marked his debut in style too, scoring a brace and helping his team secure a much-needed 3-0 victory over the Magpies.

It appears the former Juventus superstar could indeed be the missing piece in the jigsaw for Manchester United this season as they look to restore their lost glory under the leadership of Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.
