Arsenal are looking to improve their attacking options in the January transfer window and have been linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.
Arsenal have started the season in fine form, and they are currently second in the league table. The Gunners will look to go all the way in the title race this time around and bringing in the right reinforcements could prove to be defining for them.
Former Premier League player and Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell believes that Arsenal should look to sign Ivan Toney and Pedro Neto instead of spending big money on the Nigerian striker.
“You can get Ivan Toney and Neto for virtually the money you are going to spend on Osimhen,” said Campbell on Curtis Shaw TV before adding, “Osimhen. Quality player that he is. Top-class. He has never played in the Premier League. Will he just automatically just transition to the Premier League? We don’t know.”
“Two players that we know can come in and hit the ground running are Toney and Neto. £60 million. You take Toney all day long. £80 million. If someone says pay that and you win the title, then you pay it, don’t you?!”
“You get Neto as well. You solve the problem of the Saka dilemma. And Martinelli because Neto can play on that side as well. But Toney is the key. He offers that big and strong striker, who can cause Man City problems. We have seen him cause Liverpool problems.”
Toney is currently sidelined with a suspension for breaching gambling regulations, and he will return to action in January. The 27-year-old has established himself as a reliable Premier League striker and could prove to be a quality acquisition. While Arsenal have a quality striker in Gabriel Jesus, the Brazilian is not prolific, and Toney would certainly add a new dimension to their attack.
The 27-year-old will be keen on challenging himself by joining a big club, and the opportunity to play for Arsenal during the second half of the campaign could be hard to turn down for him. Similarly, Pedro Neto has been linked with a move away from Wolves, and a move to Arsenal would be ideal for him. He will add creativity and goals from the wide areas.
Arsenal need to add more quality and depth on the flanks. They have had to overuse the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka over the past year, and signing someone like Neto would allow Mikel Arteta to rotate his squad and keep the players fresh.
Both players could be available for a more reasonable fee compared to that of Osimhen. The Nigerian international helped Napoli win the Serie A title last season, and Arsenal might have to spend a club-record fee in order to sign him. It certainly makes sense to spend that money to improve multiple positions and it will be interesting to see what the Gunners decide.
