Arsenal, Liverpool handed boost in Jonathan David pursuit

Jonathan David’s agent has suggested his client will move away from Lille in the summer, which should boost Arsenal and Liverpool’s chances of signing him.

Jonathan David has hit the ground running with Lille, and he is performing at the highest level in his second full season. Last season, he had 13 goals to his name, helping Les Dogues to the Ligue 1 title. And despite his team’s domestic struggles this term, David has still managed to slot in 16 strikes across all competitions.

Naturally, Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the 21-year-old striker, with West Ham United among those leading the charge. David Moyes wants a long-term alternative to Michail Antonio as he wants someone like David to be integrated into the system gradually.

There is also heavy interest from Liverpool, who might look to refresh their attacking options to some extent. Irrespective of the Reds’ contractual situation with star man Mohamed Salah, Jurgen Klopp is eying a long-term solution in the role of central striker, one who would essentially be a successor to Roberto Firmino.

The major competition for Liverpool and West Ham could come from Arsenal, who are definitely on the hunt for strikers. The Gunners are reportedly looking to sign two players in the summer, with the futures of their three senior strikers in major doubt.

After the season concludes, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah will be at the end of their respective deals and could be heading for the exit doors. There is also the major issue pertaining to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who could leave as soon as January. David is considered more of a replacement for Lacazette than the former Arsenal captain and could become Mikel Arteta’s primary target in the close season window.

David’s agent Nick Mavromaras has been speaking to the media lately regarding his client, suggesting a move away from Lille could be on the cards after the current season concludes. His comments appeared on Canadian outlet Radio Canada, wherein he essentially put the 21-year-old striker on the market for a transfer next summer.

Mavromaras said, “For us, the goal is to finish the season in Lille, but it will be his last season there for several reasons. I think the Premier League is a great option for him. I think he likes Spain a lot too because he likes the feeling of the ball and the very technical players.

“These two leagues are a big priority for him, but nothing is excluded. You never know, with Paris Saint-Germain or the big Italian clubs. It’s normal that all these big clubs are interested in the top scorer in Ligue 1, but I can tell you that today, there is no official offer.”

Where David will end up next summer remains to be seen, but Arsenal and Liverpool could face stiff competition in pursuit of the Canadian striker. For now, all that remains certain is that the 21-year-old is set to leave Ligue 1 champions Lille ahead of the 2021/22 season.
