Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin has been linked with a move away from the Portuguese club and Manchester United have been mentioned as a potential destination.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper’s agent Maryna Andriienko has hinted (h/t SportWitness) that the player could leave the Portuguese club in the summer but the destination remains a mystery.
Trubin is highly rated around Europe and he has the attributes to develop into a quality shot-stopper with the right guidance and experience. Links with Manchester United are hardly a surprise given the way Andre Onana has performed this season.
“Let’s wait for the summer, Trubin could get there with even more visibility. Manchester United? I’m not going to talk about it, it’ll be a secret, let’s keep it a mystery,” said the agent.
The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has been quite underwhelming and his performances have cost Manchester United valuable points. He will need to improve immensely in order to continue starting for the club next season. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Manchester United decided to bring in a quality goalkeeper at the end of the season to compete for the starting spot.
Onana was expected to come in and establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. The transfer has clearly not worked out. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper has been quite error prone and Manchester United cannot afford that level of vulnerability at the back if they want to compete for major trophies.
Trubin would be a quality long term addition and it remains to be seen whether Manchester United decide to make a move for him at the end of the season.
The goalkeeper joined Benfica last summer for a fee of around €10 million but the Portuguese club have now included a €100 million release clause in his contract. Benfica have a reputation for being a difficult club to negotiate with and Manchester United might have to pay a premium in order to secure his services.
They will be hoping to negotiate a reasonable fee with the Portuguese club and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. They paid over €50 million for Onana in the summer and Benfica could easily demand more than that for Trubin.
