Alejo Veliz admittedly ordered his agent to help seal a loan move to Sevilla, as the Argentine was finding fewer options at Tottenham.
If someone thought Alejo Veliz was the replacement Tottenham could conjure up for Harry Kane, they might have been so wrong. In truth, Spurs have yet to replace their former talisman, who left to join Bayern Munich to fulfil his dream of winning trophies.
As for Veliz, he was a prospective signing that Spurs hoped would shine in the future. In the present, the Argentine attacker has struggled for relevance, considering there are plenty more senior options for his preferred centre-forward role.
Richarlison has been superb of late, especially when Son Heung-min has missed games due to his participation with South Korea at the AFC Asian Cup. When he does return, Richarlison might also find some games on the bench, which shows the level of options Ange Postecoglou has upfront.
They also have the likes of Brennan Johnson, who can play there, while January’s arrival Timo Werner is also an option there. In short, the likelihood of Veliz getting regular game time looked slim, meaning Spurs were open to letting him leave on a loan deal.
Now, the report on Diario de Sevilla via Sport Witness insists the attacker directed his agent to accept an offer from Sevilla. Veliz has now revealed he was delighted at the prospect of tasting Spanish football with Sevilla and urged his representative to get the deal done at all costs.
Veliz said, “I am delighted with the institution, with the president and those who trusted me. I come to contribute the best of me, with goals, which characterizes any forward and give the best to the club,” he said.
“Thank God it happened, and it is an honour to be here. I have been training on the court for two weeks, with a ball, and next week I will join the group to be available to the coach.
“It is a very nice change and a very good experience, and I am very motivated.
“When my representative told me that there was the option of Sevilla, I told him that we should do everything to make it happen. It’s a huge club and I really wanted to come. Thank God I am here, and I am going to enjoy it to the fullest.”
Veliz will return to north London, hoping to make a mark on that side and challenge the likes of Son and Richalison for a place up front. While he remains on loan at Sevilla, the challenge itself is a difficult one, and he must make a significant mark there and give Postecoglou every chance to consider him in next season’s plans.
