Arsenal signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea during the summer transfer window, but the German international has been largely underwhelming.
Kai Havertz was expected to develop into a key player for Arsenal this season. But things have not gone according to plan for him. He has struggled to find the back of the net and his performance have been below power as well.
Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer believes that he is nothing more than a squad player for Arsenal now. The Newcastle United legend was speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, where he made his claims.
Speaking on the BBC’s MOTD, he said, “When you look at the numbers – I mean there’s definitely a player in there – but for a player of his ability, it doesn’t match the numbers. They need to improve. You know though that you have to pay £60-70m for a squad player nowadays. So he’s going to play his part but whether he’ll be a regular or not, I don’t think so.”
It remains to be seen whether the German international can make himself more useful in the coming months. There is no doubt that he is a top-class player with the attributes to develop into world-class footballer.
He was regarded as one of the best young players in the world during his time in the Bundesliga. The move to the Premier League has not worked out so far. Despite helping Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League, his performance at Stanford Bridge were hardly exceptional.
It will be interesting to see if Mikel Arteta can get the best out of his summer signing. Arsenal paid significant amount of money for the former Chelsea attacker, and they will look to get some value out of their investment now.
Havertz is clearly lacking in confidence and sharpness right now and he will need to work hard in training in order to get back to his best once again. The 24-year-old is the versatile enough to operate in multiple roles and he could be an indispensable asset for Arsenal if he manages to regain his sharpness.
Although Arsenal paid a premium of €70 million for him, the player certainly has the potential to justify the investment in the long run. It will be interesting to see how things unfold with regards to his performances in the coming months. The Gunners should look to be more patient with the Germany international and let him re-capture his confidence and form without putting him under too much pressure.
