Ivan Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford, with Tottenham Hotspur among his suitors.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has suggested that the North London club could use a reliable striker like Ivan Toney and that he would improve their chances of Champions League qualification.
“I think Son lightens the load. He can play at number nine, especially when he has James Maddison behind him and Dejan Kulusevski. But I think if you do bring in a striker, it gives Tottenham different options. It’s a difficult one. I’ve always said if they got a proper number nine, an Ivan Toney for example, oh boy, if they do this, wow, someone who’s a proper goalscorer it will make them a better team moving forward.”
“It will give them a better opportunity to not only finish in the top four but really push other teams above them. It’ll be interesting to see what they do in the window. They can improve areas and make the squad stronger. There are areas where they need completion, especially up top.”
Tottenham chose not to sign a replacement for Harry Kane during the summer transfer window. Son Heung-min has had to carry the goalscoring burden for the North London club so far, and Richarlison has failed to step up. His performances have been largely underwhelming since the big-money move from Everton, and Tottenham are now overly dependent on Son for goals.
They must look to sign a quality striker to share the burden alongside the South Korean international. So, Toney would be a superb acquisition. The 27-year-old is a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, and he could transform Tottenham going forward.
He will want to play for a big club, and the opportunity to move to Spurs would be an exciting option for him. They have started the season well and are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification. Toney will want to compete at the highest level with them.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are not the only club keen on signing the Brentford striker, and they could face competition from clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea. It will be interesting to see if Spurs decide to make their move for the 27-year-old in January. Arsenal could certainly use a quality partner for Gabriel Jesus, and Chelsea need an upgrade on Nicolas Jackson.
Toney is currently sidelined with a suspension for breaching gambling regulations, and he will return to action midway through January. The striker will look to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact at his new club if the move goes through. Brentford will not want to sell him for cheap, and Tottenham might have to shell out a premium in order to get the deal done.
