Steven Gerrard could join Liverpool as interim manager

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could return to the club as interim manager if Arne Slot is sacked before the end of the season.

Arne Slot’s future has been a massive talking point for months. With Liverpool not living up to the expectations this season, the Dutch manager has been under pressure to save his job. Following their disappointing 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Tottenham, it’s uncertain whether he will finish the season in charge.

The Reds have already started looking for their next manager, and former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is one of the leading candidates. However, if Slot is sacked in the coming weeks, Liverpool will have to make a temporary appointment, and according to a report from Fichajes, Steven Gerrard could return to the club to take charge as their interim manager.

Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool

Slot, who took charge of the club in the summer of 2024, guided them to the league title in his very first season. Following a successful season and a summer transfer window of big-money signings, fans expected similar performances from the team.

However, they haven’t been able to live up to the expectations. The Reds have struggled across competitions, and it has put Slot under immense pressure. While he did manage to steady the ship after a very disappointing start, the Merseyside club have hit another rough patch.

They have failed to win their last two league outings and suffered a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. On the back of these performances, the Reds are seriously on the lookout for a new boss.

Gerrard could return to the Merseyside club

Alonso is the favourite to become their next permanent manager. However, if Slot is shown the exit door before the end of the season, former skipper Gerrard could return to the club as interim manager. He has been without a job since leaving Al-Ettifaq at the start of 2025 and would jump on the opportunity to manage his former club.

The plan could be to use him as a transitional step before handing the reins to Alonso on a permanent basis. Gerrard could help steady the ship before their project takes a new direction under the former Real Madrid manager.
