Manchester United rule out Gareth Southgate move

Manchester United will not pursue 55-year-old English tactician Gareth Southgate this summer, even though long-time assistant Steve Holland has arrived at Old Trafford.

According to a report by Football Insider, Gareth Southgate is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a candidate to be Ruben Amorim’s long-term replacement. So, recent updates have suggested that the 55-year-old former England boss has been a target for the Premier League club. However, a deal will not materialise this summer.

Gareth Southgate and his career so far

Gareth Southgate has been a polarising figure since entering the managerial world in 2006. A defender and a midfielder as a footballer, the Englishman represented Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough during his professional career before hanging up his boots in 2006.

Southgate took charge of Middlesbrough after entering the managerial world, and he showed some promising signs in his only job at the club level thus far. However, the 55-year-old made his name during his spells with the different levels of the English national team, coaching the under-21 side and the senior team in the past decade.

The English tactician was with the Three Lions for eight years, taking them to two successive UEFA European Championships finals and the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finals. However, Southgate’s spell with the English national team ended this past summer, and a few clubs have shown interest in him since then.

What next?

Widespread reports have linked Gareth Southgate with Manchester United for a long time. The latest rumours surfaced after the Premier League club parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The Red Devils are scouring the managerial market for a new head coach, and they will make the appointment after the 2025/26 season.

Several candidates have thus emerged on Manchester United’s wishlist, and widespread reports have also linked them with Southgate. The speculation has risen further since Steve Holland, the 55-year-old Englishman’s long-time assistant during their spell with the Three Lions, joined Michael Carrick’s backroom staff.

However, the latest update has revealed that Southgate is not on Manchester United’s wishlist, with other candidates like Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel overtaking the English tactician. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the former England boss.
