Tottenham eyeing Xabi Alonso move

Tottenham could consider appointing Xabi Alonso as Thomas Frank’s replacement, given the Spaniard is surprisingly available in the market.

According to Fichajes, Xabi Alonso is emerging as a managerial target for Tottenham should they consider parting ways with Thomas Frank. The Spaniard’s sudden availability following his exit from Real Madrid has put the market on high alert, with Spurs seemingly keeping tabs on the 44-year-old former Liverpool and Real Madrid icon.

Xabi Alonso’s exit from Real Madrid made the headlines on Monday and put the market on high alert. The managerial market has seen some surprising changes over the last few weeks, particularly in the Premier League, where Chelsea and Manchester United parted ways with Enzo Maresca and Ruben Amorim, respectively.

More clubs are actively considering changes to their managerial situation, including Liverpool with Arne Slot and Tottenham with Thomas Frank. Sticking with the latter, Spurs did not plan on firing Frank earlier, but that was many weeks ago, and the club’s situation on the pitch remains unchanged, and in fact, there’s an argument it has gotten worse.

Tottenham have considered a few names in the market, including former boss Mauricio Pochettino, as well as Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi, among others. Now, a new name has entered their list, with that of Alonso following his exit from Real Madrid.

Liverpool are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 44-year-old ‘s situation, and now that Tottenham is considering him as an option to replace Frank, the Spaniard will have plenty of options to choose from. There’s no clarity on how long Spurs are willing to persist with Frank, but should they plan on sacking him, the former Real Madrid and Liverpool icon could be in the frame to replace him.

What next for Xabi Alonso?

Alonso did have a decent time at Real Madrid in his short stint, but before he took over at the Bernabeu, there were plenty of Premier League sides interested. There could be an element that Alonso might want to return to management at the earliest, and at the moment, the Premier League seems like a big destination for the 44-year-old.

It remains to be seen whether he considers Tottenham as a realistic option for the near future, considering he could have some of the bigger teams looking at him, including possibly Manchester United next summer. Should Frank not leave for now, and Spurs wait on until the summer, they could make a compelling offer to the 44-year-old to try and tempt him to the club.
