West Ham United are eyeing Michael Carrick as a possible replacement for the stricken Nuno Espirito Santo in an attempt to save their season.
According to Ben Jacobs, Michael Carrick is a potential target for West Ham United as Nuno Espirito Santo could face the sack at the London Stadium. The Hammers’ chiefs are eager to save the season and could remove the Portuguese tactician from his post to bring in a new face, with the former Manchester United midfielder in the frame.
West Ham are on the brink of a full-blown meltdown following a disappointing loss to Wolves on Saturday. The 3-0 scoreline has brought about renewed skepticism at the London Stadium, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s role has come under scrutiny.
West Ham are considering sacking the Portuguese manager, who only arrived earlier this season following the removal of Graham Potter from the role. West Ham are currently four points away from safety, and despite their heavy loss to Wolves, their blushes were saved by the inability of rivals to capitalise.
In fact, 17th-placed Nottingham Forest had lost their game earlier on Saturday, which represented a chance for West Ham to get closer to them. However, the loss to Wolves has raised a serious question, as club owner David Sullivan is considering a change of managers again this term, as with former boss Slaven Bilic and 44-year-old former Manchester United coach Michael Carrick in the frame.
While Bilic represents the idea of bringing in an experienced manager, Carrick could be seen as an experiment of sorts, which could bring a bit of modern element into their game. West Ham are likely to judge Nuno Espirito Santo over the next games, as they are increasingly likely to make a firm decision before things get untenable.
Is Michael Carrick the right man for West Ham?
Carrick is out of a job since leaving Middlesbrough after taking charge of 136 games for the Championship outfit across all competitions. His only stint in the Premier League spanned three games for Manchester United when he was the caretaker boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in 2021.
Championship teams are interested in Michael Carrick, but, should West Ham come into the equation, the 44-year-old former Manchester United coach might prioritise a Premier League move. There will be questions asked of West Ham if they did make a move, given the former midfielder’s lack of top-flight experience, although it could be an experiment worth exploring.
