Real Madrid are looking to bring in Alvaro Arbeloa to replace Xabi Alonso on their bench following their recent struggles.
Xabi Alonso had an impressive start to life at Real Madrid. The Spanish giants were favourites for all major titles, but things have gone downhill for him and his men in recent weeks. The pressure is mounting on the former Bayer Leverkusen boss, and he could be shown the exit door in the near future.
According to a report from Fichajes, Los Blancos have identified Alvaro Arbeloa as an ideal replacement for Alonso. The former Liverpool defender is currently managing the Madrid B team, and the club are considering promoting him to the first team if they end up parting ways with Alonso mid-season.
Alonso set to be sacked
Having done wonders at Leverkusen, the Spanish giants brought in Alonso with a lot of expectations. Initial signs suggested they had made the right choice as Real Madrid were scoring goals for fun and winning games without much trouble.
However, things haven’t been that great for them in recent weeks. They have only won one out of their last five league outings. While they had a decent lead over rivals Barcelona just over a month back, they are now trailing them by four points following three draws and a defeat.
The team in white even suffered a defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League. Given how things have panned out in the recent past, Alonso’s future might be decided by their UCL tie against Manchester City. A defeat in this fixture could result in his sacking.
Arbeloa to be promoted to the first team
While they are yet to make a final decision on his future, they have already started looking for potential replacements. Given it’s mid-season and they only have a handful of options, the Spanish giants feel promoting Arbeloa could be the best decision.
The 42-year-old started his coaching career at the club back in 2020. He has come up the ranks, proving himself at every step and is currently doing wonders with their B team. Given his performances, the team in white believe he could do a great job with the players they currently have at their disposal.
While the team in white also had Zinedine Zidane and Jurgen Klopp on their radar, those moves seem unlikely at this point. As a result, they seem set to go ahead with Arbeloa.
