Manchester United eyeing Roberto De Zerbi as Ruben Amorim replacement

Manchester United may turn to 46-year-old Italian tactician Robert De Zerbi to replace Ruben Amorim if they sack the Portuguese manager.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Roberto De Zerbi is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the managerial market for a possible replacement for Ruben Amorim after a dreadful start to the 2024/25 season. So, the 46-year-old Marseille head coach has emerged as a target for the struggling Premier League giants.

While the Red Devils are not considering parting ways with Amorim anytime soon, they have kept their options open. So, while Manchester United will give the Portuguese tactician enough time to turn things around this season, De Zerbi is an option to take over if the results do not improve.

Roberto De Zerbi and his career so far

Roberto De Zerbi has established himself as one of the world’s best young managers over the past half-decade. While the 46-year-old tactician worked with four clubs before joining Sassuolo, he did not rise in prominence until he took charge of the Serie A club. His stock skyrocketed after joining Brighton & Hove Albion, and he spent two seasons with the Premier League outfit.

De Zerbi left Brighton last summer to join Marseille, and he oversaw a fruitful 2024/25 campaign, guiding Les Phoceens to the UEFA Champions League. The Italian manager’s exploits at the Ligue 1 club have not gone unnoticed, compelling Manchester United to consider a move if they part ways with Ruben Amorim.

Premier League return on the horizon?

Roberto De Zerbi has been on Manchester United’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as they have made a horrendous start to the 2025/26 season. While the Red Devils were promising during their pre-season campaign, they have failed to show the results in the first few weeks of the new campaign.

Widespread reports have suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still full behind Amorim, which the TEAMtalk report corroborates. However, the struggling Premier League giants have kept their options open if the results do not improve.

Several candidates, including Kieran McKenna, have thus emerged on Manchester United’s radar, with De Zerbi also a viable target. The 46-year-old Italian tactician has experience in the Premier League, and he should be a solid fit at Old Trafford. However, it will be interesting to see if Marseille will be smooth negotiators with Manchester United.
