West Ham United eyeing Gary O’Neil as Graham Potter replacement

West Ham United are exploring the market for a Graham Potter replacement, with former Wolves and Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil part of their thinking.

According to Football Insider, Gary O’Neil is on West Ham United’s shortlist to replace Graham Potter. The London outfit are looking at the 42-year-old English coach as a potential option to take them forward, although there are other candidates in the mix as Potter’s position has become untenable.

West Ham have had a disastrous start to the new campaign, as they languish in 18th place after their loss at home to Crystal Palace. They could potentially finish the weekend in 19th spot, should Aston Villa win against Sunderland, as only Wolves have theoretically performed worse than them.

Graham Potter’s position has become untenable in recent weeks, as fans are protesting outside the London Stadium to demand a change of manager. The Hammers’ board are already exploring the market for replacements, with Gary O’Neil being the latest to be added to their shortlist.

The 42-year-old English coach was the manager of Wolves very recently, as well as being in charge of Bournemouth before that. Gary O’Neil has plenty of experience in the top flight, especially with teams languishing around the relegation zone.

West Ham appear to have made their decision on Potter, although there are suggestions they could still afford him a couple of more games. Those are away trips to Everton and Arsenal, as none of those might seem winnable at the rate the Hammers are performing at the moment. Realistically, it could be a matter of time, as the club may need time to finalise a replacement, as Potter could soon depart.

West Ham have several names on their list

Gary O’Neil is not the only name the Hammers are considering to replace Potter, as there are others in the mix. Nuno Espirito Santo is a name they like, and the Portuguese is readily available following his recent departure from Nottingham Forest after a successful full season at the City Ground.

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is also a target, with the former Manchester United coach likely to spring up his seat at the opportunity of returning to the Premier League. Either way, there are plenty of options for the Hammers to consider, including 42-year-old English coach Gary O’Neil, although they have not made a choice just yet.
