Tottenham Hotspur could end up parting ways with Ange Postecoglou even before the end of the ongoing season.
According to a report from Give Me Sport, Tottenham’s faith in Ange Postecoglou has begun to waver. While they were looking to back the Australian manager despite their poor results, the defeat at the hands of Chelsea has resulted in doubts regarding his future at the club.
Postecoglou took charge of the North London club in the summer of 2023, and he did quite an impressive job in his first season in charge. But things have not been that great for him this season, as the team has struggled throughout.
Despite the poor results, the board were looking to back him as long as possible. The Europa League was seen as a safety net. If he could lead them to European glory, it could have gone a long way in salvaging their season. But even that lifeline now appears to be slipping away following their defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.
Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea
The defeat at the hands of the Blues was Tottenham Hotspur’s 16th in the Premier League, and it has resulted in a lot of chatter around the future of former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou. The 59-year-old’s relations with the fans also took a major hit during their last outing.
His decision to substitute Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert in the 64th minute, bringing on Pape Matar Sarr and Brennan Johnson, did not sit well with the fans. The situation escalated when Sarr appeared to score a potential equaliser.
In the immediate aftermath, Postecoglou turned to the crowd and cupped his ear, a gesture he later said was meant to encourage celebration, though many fans interpreted it differently. Moments later, VAR ruled the goal out. This incident could certainly have a big impact on his future.
Ange Postecoglou to be sacked?
Tottenham are gearing up for the Europa League quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt next week. While that fixture could have a massive say on his future, there is a possibility that he might not be on the bench by then, following yet another loss in the league.
Multiple reports have suggested that Ange Postecoglou will remain in charge until Spurs’ hopes of winning silverware are alive. That may still be the case. But for the first time, sources close to the club are no longer entirely convinced he is the man to take them forward.
