Everton could make a move for ex-Manchester United chief Dan Ashworth, as Brighton & Hove Albion are confident of keeping hold of David Weir.
Everton are all set to step into a new era, and it could lead to significant changes at the club. Not only will they be moving to a new stadium, but their new owners, The Friedkin Group, are also looking to make key changes to their executive team.
With Kevin Thelwell’s future at the club uncertain, the Toffees have already started looking for a new director of football. According to a report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, the Merseyside club are interested in the services of David Weir and Dan Ashworth.
While they would love to have the Brighton & Hove Albion chief at the club, the Seagulls are confident of fending off interest in him. They could end up completely shifting their focus on Dan Ashworth, who is looking to make a return to football following his departure from Manchester United.
Everton are on the lookout for a new director
Kevin Thelwell has been the director of football at Everton since the start of 2022. While the 51-year-old has done a decent job, he is expected to be parting ways with the Toffees at the end of the season when his contract at the club runs out.
The Friedkin Group are looking for a top-level replacement, and they have their eyes on Weir, who has been doing wonders at Brighton & Hove Albion. The former Everton captain has been at the club since 2018, and he has served in different roles. His work has put him on the radar of Everton as well as Arsenal.
Despite significant interest in his signature, the Seagulls are quite optimistic about keeping hold of their star man. While Everton are hoping to hold talks with the 54-year-old regarding the job at Bramley-Moore Dock, they might not be able to prise him away.
Everton are also interested in Dan Ashworth
David Weir is not the only one on their radar, as they have also been linked with Dan Ashworth, who has been without a job since parting ways with Manchester United towards the end of 2024. While the 53-year-old only took charge ahead of the 2024/25 season, things did not work out for him at Old Trafford, and he ended up handing in his resignation.
He is hoping for a quick return to football, and building a new project at Everton could be of interest, as he will have to rebuild the entire squad. Having worked at Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United, he has significant experience at the highest level and could be a great addition to the Toffees’ executive team.
