Everton are keen on exploring the idea of appointing Brighton’s David Weir as their new director of football in the summer.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Everton have set sights on Brighton & Hove Albion’s highly-rated director of football, David Weir, in the summer. The Toffees want to bring their 54-year-old former player back to the club and potentially replace current director Kevin Thelwell.
Everton are set to embark on a fresh journey to stabilise their club as the new ownership under the Friedkin Group are making big plans for the future. There was a huge debacle with the takeover until the Friedkin Group made their move, following issues with former contenders 777 partners.
In any case, with the takeover now complete and Everton fans looking forward to moving to their new stadium ahead of next season, some big changes are coming up. The Friedkin Group made their first serious decision with the appointment of David Moyes in the managerial hot seat as they sacked Sean Dyche from the post.
Now, they are focused on bringing in a solid director of football in the future, with names like Dan Ashworth mentioned in the past. The latest name to be linked is that of Brighton & Hove Albion executive David Weir, with the Toffees keen to appoint their 54-year-old former player to the Director of Football post.
Weir has been doing his work in the background at Brighton, having succeeded the aforementioned Dan Ashworth when he left for Newcastle United. The 54-year-old has come through the ranks, having started his tenure with the Seagulls as their loans manager back in 2019, and he has since gained promotions at different levels.
David Weir to replace Kevin Thelwell?
Kevin Thelwell is the current director of football at Everton, and he is yet to show his mettle after Moyes took over. He cited that the Toffees ‘kept their powder dry’ in January, and mentioned there are big plans ahead of the summer. With the links to names like Ashworth and Weir, it is becoming clearer that the Friedkin Group are keen to bring in a Director of Football with different ideas and a different reputation.
Weir could potentially be the answer to their problem, as the 54-year-old could replace Thelwell in the position. Weir’s current deal with Brighton expires at the end of the season, which will allow for a smooth transition to taking up the role at Everton, as this is a different scenario than when he has to leave, wherein he would have to serve a long period outside of the game.
