Predicted Liverpool lineup against PSV Eindhoven: Chiesa, Elliott set for rare starts; Salah to get some rest

Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott will make rare starts for Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

PSV Eindhoven have failed to win four of their seven UEFA Champions League outings this season, and Wednesday’s game against Liverpool will be a difficult game for them. On the other hand, Liverpool are expected to field a heavily-rotated side, and it will be interesting to see if the home team can take advantage of that and grind out a victory here.

Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota are unavailable, while Arne Slot has rested several first-team regulars, including Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. So, the travelling squad is without many familiar faces, with Slot set to rotate his troops on Wednesday.

During his pre-match press conference, Slot spoke about the rotations, saying, “All the ones that are left behind could have played tomorrow. But for the long term – so, it doesn’t tell you anything about the short term, doesn’t tell us anything about Saturday’s game – but for the long term, if you look back at our season, it has been almost every time after three or four or five weeks we gave them the break during the week when there was a League Cup or an FA Cup [game]. If there was a moment for them to get some freshness back we have always done that.”

Cody Gakpo and Andrew Robertson are the only starters travelling to the Netherlands to take on PSV Eindhoven for the midweek European fixture, out of the team that picked up a comfortable victory over Ipswich Town at the weekend.

Caoimhin Kelleher is set to start in goal here. Connor Bradley and Andrew Robertson will start as the full-backs and they will look to help out at both ends of the pitch. Jarell Quansah will start alongside Wataru Endo in central defence.

Tyler Morton and Trey Nyoni will start in the midfield pivot and they will look to add control and defensive cover.

Harvey Elliott will start in the number ten role and he will look to add creativity and goals to the side. Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo will add creativity and goals to the side. Darwin Nunez will lead the line for the Reds.

Predicted Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Bradley, Quansah, Endo, Robertson; Morton, Nyoni; Chiesa, Elliott, Gakpo; Nunez
