West Ham United hold talks with Paulo Fonseca

West Ham United chairman David Sullivan has spoken to former AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca about replacing under-fire manager Julen Lopetegui.

According to TBR, West Ham United have held talks with recently sacked ex-AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca about taking over from Julen Lopetegui. The latter is understood to be very close to leaving the Hammers following a string of disappointing results, with the Italian seen as one of the ideal candidates to replace the Spaniard.

West Ham United are a club in disarray following their disappointing start to the season. After their ninth loss of the season at the weekend, this time against Manchester City, Julen Lopetegui’s position has come under massive pressure, with some outlets even reporting that the Hammers have already sacked him.

However, there’s been no official statement yet from the club, meaning the Spaniard might be on borrowed time as the club continues to look for the ideal successor. Things have been weary for Lopetegui following a string of dismal results, which has taken its toll, especially after the club backed him in the transfer market during the summer.

There are some names thrown around over the last month or so, including German manager Roger Schmidt. Other candidates are also mentioned, with Graham Potter seemingly one of the top choices for the Hammers to consider.

Only a few weeks ago, Potter reportedly preferred the Hammers over other suitors, and in the current scenario, it appears that West Ham are the only viable candidate. However, as per the report on the latest name being linked with replacing Lopetegui, Potter might not be the primary candidate the London side are considering, as recently sacked ex-AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca is a top name on their list.

Fonseca, a three-time league winner with Shakhtar Donetsk, carries an impressive enough CV compared to Potter, who might pip him in terms of Premier League experience. The recently sacked ex-AC Milan boss was one of West Ham’s choices before David Moyes left in the summer and could have emerged as a prime candidate to succeed Lopetegui.

The Hammers have held talks with Fonseca through Chairman David Sullivan, with suggestions that they are eager to finalise a deal with the Italian to take over at the club. Whether he is ahead of the likes of Potter is a question that will likely become clear in the coming period, as West Ham are poised to part ways with Lopetegui.
