Predicted Barcelona lineup against Athletic Club: Yamal in contention; Olmo misses out again

Lamine Yamal will be in contention to represent Barcelona against Athletic Club in the Supercopa de Espana semi-final on Wednesday.

Barcelona will aim to reach the Spanish Super Cup final when they lock horns with Athletic Club in the semi-final at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Riyadh on Wednesday night. And Hansi Flick has greeted a positive update on the team news front ahead of his side’s latest fixture.

Lamine Yamal is fit and ready to return after recovering from an ankle injury. The teenage sensation is in the travelling squad for the Spanish Super Cup alongside others who have been on the sidelines, including Andreas Christensen. However, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Marc Bernal remain on the sidelines due to their long-term knee injuries.

In addition, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have travelled to Saudi Arabia, although neither player will be eligible to take on Athletic Club. Meanwhile, during his pre-match press conference, Flick addressed the duo’s registration issues. The German tactician also spoke about Yamal’s recovery from his recent ankle issue.

The Barcelona manager said, “I think he [Yamal] has trained three or four times. He is ready, he can play tomorrow. I don’t think it’s going to happen tomorrow [Olmo and Victor’s registration], but we’re going to wait. The only thing we can do right now is wait.”

“As I said before, it’s not so easy for us not to have two very important players for us. They have improved a lot. Dani Olmo is an excellent player, of course, we miss him. But we have to continue. Of course, it’s going to affect us, but this will give us the opportunity to be closer as a team. We have to show that we are a team.”

With Olmo still unavailable, Gavi will reprise the no. 10 role. Meanwhile, Flick might introduce Yamal off the bench, with Fermin Lopez pairing up with Raphinha on the flanks. Robert Lewandowski will lead the line for Barcelona against Athletic Club on Wednesday. As for the midfield unit, there is no looking past Marc Casado and Pedri.

The backline should see no surprises, with Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, and Alejandro Balde completing the quartet. Ronald Araujo should appear off the bench if the match conditions are favourable. Finally, there is no looking past Inaki Pena between the sticks.

Predicted Barcelona XI: Pena; Kounde, Cubarsi, Martinez, Balde; Casado, Pedri; Raphinha, Gavi, Fermin; Lewandowski
