Julian Nagelsmann open to Manchester United move

Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann is open to taking the Manchester United job following Erik ten Hag’s sacking.

Manchester United’s search for a new boss has picked up pace following the sacking of Erik ten Hag. While they have been linked with a host of names, Julian Nagelsmann is someone who has been on INEOS’s wishlist ever since they bought a minority stake in the club.

According to a report from talkSPORT, the German national team head coach is open to taking the job at Old Trafford. While the Red Devils are ready to pay compensation, it won’t be that straightforward as many things need to fall into place for it to go through.

Manchester United finally sacked Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag’s future was uncertain in the summer, but INEOS decided to back him. They gave him the needed funds to turn things around. But, things did not fall in place and after a stretch of eight games where they only won once, the Manchester United board have finally shown the Dutch manager the exit door.

The 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham United on Sunday was the final nail in the coffin. With ten Hag gone, Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over as their interim boss until an ideal replacement has been found.

While they have been linked with quite a few targets, Nagelsmann is quite high on their wishlist. The 37-year-old’s data-driven approach is a major reason for the Red Devils’ interest in him. He has had a successful stint at Bayern Munich and has been doing a decent job since taking charge of the German national team.

Manchester United will have to rely on Jurgen Klopp

Nagelsmann’s contract with the national team has been extended until the 2026 World Cup. However, Manchester United are still keen on luring him away, and they are ready to pay the needed compensation to get him on board. But, they will have to rely on a unique clause that exists in the former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s Red Bull contract.

The German tactician parted ways with the Reds after the end of last season. He has decided against being a coach going ahead and has taken up the role of Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull clubs. However, his contract there has a clause which will allow him to leave if the German national team comes calling.

Manchester United will hope Klopp is ready to make the most of that clause if they want to bring Nagelsmann to Old Trafford. While it is certainly possible, the complexity of a potential move suggests it is highly unlikely to go through.
