Erik ten Hag in a stronger position at Manchester United due to Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate decisions

The future of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United looks much more secure following Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate’s decisions.

Erik ten Hag was under immense pressure heading into the international break. The Manchester United hierarchy even held meetings regarding his future. However, the Dutchman continues as their boss for now.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Dutch manager is in a stronger position than he was heading into the break because of Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate’s decisions.

Manchester United are 14th in the Premier League with just two wins out of their first seven games. It is their worst start to a league campaign, and they have been winless in their last five outings across competitions.

After the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa prior to the break, there was a lot of speculation about Erik ten Hag and his future, and Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate were considered two top targets for the Red Devils to replace him.

The Manchester United board held meetings to discuss a potential sacking but for now, they seem to be backing the former Ajax boss. However, things could change quickly if he fails to get things back on track.

Manchester United’s plans to replace ten Hag hit a setback

While the Red Devils could still sack Ten Hag in the coming weeks, they will have to look at other targets because Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate have already decided their future.

The former Chelsea boss was approached by the FA to take over as the new England boss, and he officially put pen to paper on Wednesday (October 16). He has signed an 18-month-long deal which will run until the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, his predecessor Gareth Southgate, who parted ways with the Three Lions after their defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 has decided to take a break from football. He is unlikely to be back in action for at least a year.

With Tuchel’s appointment as the England boss and Southgate’s decision to take a backseat, Manchester United’s plans to replace ten Hag have been disrupted. The Dutchman is in a stronger position because of these decisions, But he could still be shown the exit door depending on the results in the next few fixtures.
