Manchester United are prepared to deal with their managerial situation if Erik Ten Hag gets the sack, as a host of big names feature on their list.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United have a contingency plan in place if INEOS eventually decide to sack Erik ten Hag. A disastrous start to another season has put the pressure back on the Dutchman, who retains the board’s support, but names are floating around that he was to be removed from his post.
Erik ten Hag is probably the biggest subject discussed in the British media over the past few years. The Dutchman has managed to have another disastrous start to the Premier League season, with Manchester United languishing in 14th place after seven rounds of fixtures.
Having been backed to spend big on new players, Ten Hag’s charges have not delivered, with those two home defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Tottenham causing a stir inside Old Trafford. His future hangs in the balance, as reports suggest he has two more games to save his job.
Last summer, he narrowly escaped the sack following a stunning FA Cup Final victory over arch-rivals Manchester City. Recently, Manchester United officials held a board meeting where Ten Hag’s future was a big topic of discussion, but it did not result in a decision to let him leave.
Manchester United have a few names on its list to target in the scenario of ending up sacking Ten Hag in the coming period. One of them is Thomas Tuchel, who might be out of reach after he agreed to become England’s new manager. However, the others there include former Brighton manager Graham Potter and former Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.
Manchester United’s managerial targets
With Tuchel no longer being an option, Southgate’s name is considered important, given his good relations with INEOS. However, the former England boss has ruled out an immediate return to football management as he insisted on taking a year off before entering the frame again.
There are other names like Ruben Amorim and Sebastian Hoeness, although Potter’s name could be an important one given his pedigree in the Premier League. Either way, it appears that Manchester United have a contingency plan in place should they end up sacking Ten Hag should results continue to evade in the next few games.
