Everton considering Gareth Southgate as Sean Dyche replacement

Everton might replace Sean Dyche with 54-year-old English manager Gareth Southgate amid uncertainties surrounding the future of the incumbent.

According to a report by Give Me Sport, Gareth Southgate is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees are considering parting ways with Sean Dyche after a horrendous start to the 2024/25 season. So, several options have emerged on the Merseyside club’s radar, with the former head coach of the English national side among the targets.

Gareth Southgate has not had many managerial jobs in his career but has still been in the news for most of his career. A defender and a midfielder as a footballer, the Englishman turned out for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough before calling time on his career in 2006.

The 54-year-old immediately entered the managerial world and managed Middlesbrough for three years. However, Southgate has made his name during his spell in England’s setup, coaching the under-21 side and the senior side in the past decade.

The English tactician was with the Three Lions for eight years, taking them to two successive UEFA European Championships finals and the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finals. However, Southgate’s spell with England ended this past summer, and he is a free agent. The experienced manager does not have a shortage of clubs pursuing his signature, with recent reports linking him with Manchester United. However, his next assignment might come with Everton.

Everton’s interest in Gareth Southgate is understandable. The Toffees are keeping their options open after a dreadful start to the 2024/25 season. Sean Dyche’s men are 19th on the Premier League table after managing only one point in their first five outings, boasting the joint-worst defensive record alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers.

So, it is hardly surprising that Dyche is under pressure to turn things around. If that does not happen, Everton will likely part ways with the 53-year-old Englishman. Southgate will then come in contention to replace Dyche as the new Everton manager.

Recent reports have also linked David Moyes with a homecoming at Everton. So, it will be interesting to see who replaces Dyche at the helm at Goodison Park if he cannot save his job in the next few weeks.
