Hansi Flick might not make any changes to the Barcelona starting lineup against Girona at Estadi Montilivi on Sunday.
Barcelona will aim to continue the perfect start to the 2024/25 season when they lock horns with Girona at Estadi Montilivi on Sunday afternoon. And Hansi Flick does not have any new injury concerns hampering his preparations ahead of his side’s latest fixtures.
Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo, Marc Bernal, and Frenkie de Jong remain on the sidelines, with the latter the closest to returning to action. Meanwhile, Gavi and Ansu Fati are training, while Fermin Lopez should be fit and available soon. But the trio has missed the trip to Girona and will not be with the travelling squad.
However, during his pre-match press conference, Flick discussed the progress that Gavi and Ansu Fati have made in the last few days. He also suggested Eric Garcia might start on Sunday, saying, “From what I see in training, he is doing very well. We’re not sure about the starting lineup, but he might be in the XI.”
On Fati and Gavi, the Barcelona manager said, “We are happy to have him [Fati] with us again. In the coming weeks, he will have a chance, and that is good for the team. Gavi is also taking part in the training sessions.
“It’s good to have both of them. Yes, we put the focus on Ansu for Thursday. They all want to play. They are ready to play and they like to play. I have no doubt about that.”
With Gavi and Fermin Lopez still unavailable, Marc Casado and Pedri are automatic picks for the double pivot in the middle of the park. Dani Olmo will reprise the no. 10 role, with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha occupying the wide attacking berths. Robert Lewandowski will lead the line for Barcelona against Girona.
Meanwhile, despite Flick’s suggestions, Eric Garcia will miss out on Sunday, with Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez pairing up at the heart of the defence. Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde will continue as the full-backs, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen taking his spot between the sticks.
Predicted Barcelona XI: ter Stegen; Kounde, Cubarsi, Martinez, Balde; Casado, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Raphinha; Lewandowski
