Manchester United are interested in the services of England manager Gareth Southgate as their next boss but he is not their priority target.
According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are on the lookout for a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag and current England boss Gareth Southgate is one of the names on their radar. While the Red Devils are interested in him, the 53-year-old is not at the top of their list.
Erik ten Hag’s future at United
Ten Hag’s future at the Manchester-based club has been the talk of the town of late. While he did a great job in his debut season, the Dutch manager hasn’t been able to replicate it in the second season.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INOES who recently took control over clubs’ sporting decisions following their purchase of a minority stake at the club are looking to part ways with the former Ajax boss. They feel he is not the ideal fit for their new project and are looking at potential options.
United are expected to make a decision on the future of Ten Hag after the end of the season. Meanwhile, they are on the lookout for someone who can help them rebuild the club and return to their old glory days. Gareth Southgate is one of the names on their radar.
Gareth Southgate to Manchester United?
The 53-year-old has been in charge of the England national team since 2016. He has only had one club managerial role in his career which was with Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009. But, his work with the Three Lions has been quite impressive.
He has helped them reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and the final of Euro 2020. They might not have won a major tournament under him but England have played some impressive football.
While United are keen on him, he is not their priority. The Red Devils are in talks with him but those talks are not as advanced as reported elsewhere. He is one of the multiple contenders on their wishlist as they look for a replacement for the Dutchman.
One of the reasons why he is not a priority is that United are unlikely to wait until the end of the Euros before making a managerial appointment if they do sack Erik ten Hag.
