Michael Edwards turned down Manchester United in favour of Liverpool move

Michael Edwards reportedly turned down a move to join Manchester United in the capacity of a Sporting Director.

According to Football Insider, Michael Edwards reportedly rejected an approach from Manchester United to take over as their new sporting director. The 44-year-old had no intention of returning to football in that capacity and has since accepted a more senior role with Liverpool to become FSG’s CEO of Football.

Michael Edwards has been a coveted name in the world of Premier League sides, and his potential availability made many top-level teams try their luck in appointing him. For some time now, Liverpool had a favourable edge over other rivals owing to the successful time the 44-year-old spent at the club.

Liverpool have since agreed with the 44-year-old over a return to the club in a more senior role, Edwards might have rejected a few top clubs in the process. Chelsea reportedlky held a strong interest in making the transfer guru their new sporting director.

Similarly, Manchester United had set sights on Edwards ever since the talk of INOES purchasing a stake in the club emerged. The report states the 44-year-old rejected their overtures as he wanted to avoid returning to football in the capacity of a sporting director.

Instead, he stood firm in his desire to take a more substantial role, and Liverpool offered him that. Manchester United might have tried to lure him with a significant offer, but the 44-year-old was adamant about his future ambitions in football.

Michael Edwards takes up a senior role at Liverpool

Like Manchester United, Liverpool may have failed with an approach to appoint Edwards as their sporting director. However, the Merseysiders were intent on bringing the 44-year-old back to the club and have since negotiated terrific terms with the transfer guru.

Edwards has agreed to join Liverpool as FSG CEO of Football, which essentially points towards running football operations for the club. Manchester United have also adopted a similar model. Still, there was not a chance they would have offered Edwards a senior role like the Merseysiders did, as the 44-year-old will now bring his sporting director to the club.
