Liverpool line up move for Pedro Marques

Liverpool are reportedly keen on appointing the Benfica technical director Pedro Marques.

As per the Athletic, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are now looking to build a new structure within the club after the arrival of Michael Edwards and they are starting to put the plans in place. Pedro Marques has done an impressive job at Benfica, and he should prove to be a quality acquisition for Liverpool.

Michael Edwards returned to Liverpool earlier in the week, and he will take over as the CEO of football at Liverpool. Apart from his duties at the Premier League club, the 44-year-old will also help acquire and oversee a second club. It is believed that Marques will help out in that regard and he will be employed by FSG rather than Liverpool. The technical director will be in charge of attracting global talent.

Liverpool have already built up a relationship with Marques since 2022 when former sporting director Julian Ward held talks with Benfica during the transfer of Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool are also expected to appoint Richard Hughes as their new sporting director soon. The Reds are already building for a future after Jurgen Klopp and it will be interesting to see if they can bring in a quality manager at the end of the season as well.

Liverpool preparing for life after Klopp

The German has already announced that he will be leaving in the summer and he wants to take a sabbatical from management. Appointing a quality replacement for him will be difficult for any club in the world. Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has been linked as a potential replacement.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans will be quite delighted with the return of Michael Edwards and it is clear that FSG are working behind the scenes to put together a functional infrastructure within the club equipped to deal with the departure of their charismatic manager.

Meanwhile, Marques will be attracted to the idea of joining one of the biggest clubs in the world, and it remains to be seen whether he can make a lasting impact at Liverpool in the coming seasons.
