Liverpool and Michael Edwards have come to an agreement over the 44-year-old transfer guru’s return to the club as FSG CEO of Football.
The title of FSG CEO of Football may confuse a few, but Michael Edwards is set to be named that as he reaches an agreement with Liverpool over a return to the club. David Ornstein confirmed the news that the 44-year-old transfer guru will now rejoin the Merseysiders in a new capacity starting on June 1.
Michael Edwards returns to Liverpool
A prolonged saga could end imminently as Michael Edwards has agreed on a return to Liverpool, albeit in a far more significant role. The 44-year-old transfer guru had a successful time before at the club in the capacity of a Sporting Director, a role he wasn’t interested in working in again.
Widespread reports had suggested Edwards did not want to work as a Sporting Director again and instead looked at something different. Liverpool incidentally failed with an approach to re-sign the 44-year-old in that role, as he made it abundantly clear that wasn’t his cup of tea anymore.
As David Ornstein confirmed, Edwards rejected overtures from Chelsea and Manchester United for similar roles, with the latter, under the guidance of INEOS, wanting him to spearhead their project. Liverpool had identified this issue and began pushing to bring the 44-year-old transfer guru back in a new capacity as they have now reached an agreement with him and will name him FSG CEO of Football.
This essentially means that Edwards will head football operations for Liverpool and make critical decisions towards bringing sustainable growth and success to the club. As he takes over on June 1, his first order of business would be to find a suitable replacement for Jurgen Klopp, something he will assign his new Sporting Director.
Richard Huges to join as Sporting Director?
For some time now, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Richard Hughes, the outgoing Bournemouth Sporting Director. He has emerged on top of the Merseysider’s list, and it appears that his arrival is imminent.
He will work closely with Edwards to guide the club in a new direction and bring about the success of a team like Liverpool warrants. Should the pair arrive at Anfield, it will be the beginning of a new era at the club, as the fans will look forward to it with optimism.
