Manchester United will reportedly look to tie Erik ten Hag to a new contract and want to initiate discussions over the deal.
According to a report by 90min, Erik ten Hag still has over 18 months left to run on his contract with Manchester United. But the Red Devils are eager to open talks with the Dutchman over a new deal. And they have already approached his entourage to sound out the prospect of discussions.
Erik ten Hag had a rather unspectacular career as a footballer, with his best phase coming at Twente. The 53-year-old represented the Dutch club three times while also turning out for other teams like Utrecht, RKC Waalwijk, and De Graafschap. A centre-back by trade, he was a no-nonsense tackler at the back.
The Dutch tactician transitioned into the managerial world by taking over at Go Ahead Eagles in 2012. He then cut his teeth by managing Bayern Munich’s reserve side between 2013 and 2015. And after a short stint with Utrecht, he rose to prominence during his spell with Ajax.
He guided the Dutch giants to three Eredivisie titles during his half-decade stay at the Johan Cruijff Stadium. In addition, Ajax also won three other trophies during ten Hag’s stay at the club. But his stay there ended last year after five glorious years as Manchester United snapped him up.
The 53-year-old arrived at Old Trafford after a horrendous 2021/22 campaign for Manchester United. His stint with the Premier League club did not begin well as they lost their first two games of the 2022/23 campaign. But ten Hag gradually got his ideas through to the players, who produced brilliant performances as the term wore on.
Things gradually improved considerably, and Manchester United won the EFL Cup, beating Newcastle United. They were also in contention to win the FA Cup but lost to Manchester City in the final. But most importantly, the Red Devils clinched a top-four finish to return to the UEFA Champions League for the 2023/24 season.
The new campaign has not started well for Manchester United, who have won only four of their eight games thus far. In addition, ten Hag has found himself in controversy due to the Jadon Sancho situation, with the manager banishing the Englishman from the first-team scene.
But the Red Devils remain impressed with the Dutchman’s work at Old Trafford thus far. And they have already contacted his entourage to sound out the possibility of discussions over a new deal. Manchester United will hope to open talks over a new contract soon, and it will be interesting to see how they progress.
