Mateu Alemany is reportedly closing in on joining Atletico Madrid, who will beat Tottenham and PSG to his signature.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Mateu Alemany might have found his next job. The 60-year-old, who most recently served Barcelona in a directorial capacity, will likely join Atletico Madrid in the coming weeks. Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain have also been keen on signing him.
Mateu Alemany is a native of Andratx and began his footballing journey with RCD Mallorca. He served the club as the Deputy Managing Director, the CEO, and the President in a span of 20 clubs. The Spaniard’s next job came at Valencia CF, serving Los Che as the General Director between 2017 and 2019.
But Alemany rose to prominence during his stint with Barcelona between 2021 and 2023. The 60-year-old served the Blaugrana as the Director of Football, masterminding the game-changing signings like Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen, among others.
Those arrivals have transformed Barcelona into a formidable force in European football. While the results in the UEFA Champions League have not been satisfactory, Barcelona won the league title last season. And after their business in the summer transfer window this year, the Catalan giants have one of the most complete squads in Europe.
But Alemany’s stint with Barcelona ended after the summer transfer window shut down. And he has become a sought-after figure in the market for directors. Recent reports have linked him with Tottenham Hotspur, with Paris Saint-Germain also keen on signing him. While PSG’s interest is somewhat surprising, Tottenham eyed him as a replacement for Fabio Paratici.
But Tottenham and PSG are losing the race to sign the former Barcelona Director, with Atletico Madrid being in the pole position. But Alemany does not want to rush into the decision, even though Atletico Madrid might be a preferable option. But PSG and Tottenham will offer him better money, thus delaying the decision.
Nonetheless, the Spanish heavyweights remain the front-runners to secure Alemany’s services in the coming weeks. But it will be interesting to see if Tottenham or PSG can beat Atletico Madrid in the race to sign him.
