Tottenham looking to appoint Mateu Alemany

Tottenham close to securing priority option for future Johnny Cardoso deal.

Tottenham are ready to take advantage of the mutiny at Barcelona to appoint Mateu Alemany as their new sporting director.

Fabrizio Romano reports on Tottenham’s interest in appointing Mateu Alemany as their new sporting director amid the mutiny at Barcelona. The 60-year-old will leave his role after the club granted more powers to Deco. The situation has alerted Spurs in their search for Fabio Paratici’s replacement.

The age of sporting directors is relatively new to the Premier League, although clubs like Liverpool and Manchester City have had one for a few years. For Tottenham, the era took off to the worst possible start amid Fabio Paratici’s involvement in the Juventus financial scandal and subsequent ban.

Spurs have since been searching for a replacement to take the Italian’s place at the club without much success. They had tried with several candidates, which did not result in success.

Getafe director Ramon Planes emerged as a strong contender for the job, but things have cooled since. Daniel Levy continues to search for an able replacement, with Barcelona’s Matue Alemany the latest name linked with the role.

There’s mutiny at Barcelona, and the 60-year-old transfer expert could leave his position. There are suggestions that former midfielder Deco got handed a more significant role in transfers. Alemany was instrumental in bringing some top players since Joan Laporta became president. He now looks unhappy with the current arrangement at the club.

The mutiny seems like an old problem, even before Deco’s arrival. At the end of last season, Alemany decided to leave his role, with Aston Villa linked with the 60-year-old to become their sporting director. The transfer expert then made a U-turn and decided to stay with Barcelona.

Now, he’s made another decision to leave the club and could eye a move to the Premier League. Aston Villa are no longer an option considering they have already appointed Monchi as their sporting director. Hence, the likes of Tottenham could become a solid destination for the 60-year-old, with the Londoners now keen.

Alemany will bring plenty of experience and seems like a viable candidate to replace Paratici in that role. He has good connections in the transfer market and could enhance Tottenham’s pull to sign some of the top players in the world.
