Liverpool held talks with 41-year-old Paul Mitchell regarding the sporting director role at their club.
According to Get French Football News, Liverpool are interested in bringing Paul Mitchell as their new sporting director. The Merseyside club are impressed with what the 41-year-old has done at AS Monaco and want to land him at the club.
Mitchell joined Monaco as their sporting director back in the summer of 2020. He has done a great job since joining the French club. However, he is set to leave them after the upcoming summer transfer window. Despite the attempts of the club to extend his contract, the 41-year-old is all set to part ways with the club.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will also be without a sporting director in the summer. Julian Ward who joined the Merseyside club a year back as their sporting director announced in November that he would be leaving the club.
It came as a surprise to many, even Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp wasn’t expecting such a decision from Ward. But, with his departure certain, the club have started to look for alternatives.
Klopp’s team have been struggling in the ongoing season. They are fighting for a top-four spot in the league and have been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid recently.
Liverpool’s struggle has a lot to do with their recent transfers and the fact that they have quite a few players who are past their prime. They will head into the market to look for new signings and offload a few of their senior players.
And, a sporting director is someone who plays a key role in such transfer negotiations. While they do have Ward to take care of things for now, the club are looking at the near future. And, they have identified Paul Mitchell as a potential candidate for the role.
