Ilkay Gundogan ready to snub Barcelona and open Manchester City contract talks

Manchester City are set to receive a major boost as Ilkay Gundogan plans to open contract talks despite interest from Barcelona.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester City have been offered a massive boost in their quest to keep hold of Ilkay Gundogan. The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder has become a sought-after figure in the European market, with his current contract at the Etihad expiring at the end of next season.

Barcelona have expressed the desire to sign the talented midfielder, but it appears the player is prepared to snub interest from the Catalans in favour of a prolonged stay at the Etihad. As such, Manchester City are soon set to begin contract talks with Gundogan, which has even become a priority for the club as they look to keep hold of their star players.

A native of Gelsenkirchen, Gundogan has been a part of Manchester City since the summer of 2016. His first few years at the club were marred by injuries, but in recent times, the German has seemingly established himself as a crucial element in the Cityzens’ success and is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old has already racked up 242 competitive appearances for Manchester City. He has improved his game considerably under Pep Guardiola, with his contributions in the middle of the park critical in helping the Cityzens bag three Premier League titles under the Catalan.

Gundogan’s immense success in the Premier League has not gone unnoticed, with the player emerging as a potential target for Barcelona next summer. With Xavi Hernandez keen on rebuilding the entire Barcelona setup, the Spaniard has shown the desire to bring in technically astute midfielders that can replace Sergio Busquets.

Recent reports linking Sergi Roberto to the Premier League next season have only accentuated Barcelona’s search for a reliable new operator. Gundogan, to that end, fits the bill perfectly, given his technical prowess and vast experience at the highest level of football.

However, it appears the player remains committed to Manchester City as he eyes further success under Guardiola. The report suggests Manchester City could add twelve months to the German’s current contract that expires in 2023. It could see the midfielder remain at the Etihad until 2024, while his current salary of £140,000 per week is unlikely to be altered.
