Transfer News: Takumi Minamino on Sevilla radar

La Liga side Sevilla are showing interest in Liverpool star Takumi Minamino ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Calciomercato, La Liga giants Sevilla are eyeing Liverpool star Takumi Minamino heading into the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old joined the Reds from Red Bull Salzburg in 2020 and has primarily served the role of a gamechanger off the bench. Minamino has made 51 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring 11 goals and assisting three more during that time.

The Japanese international can play anywhere along the frontline and can make a difference on his day. This season, he has popped up with several key goals for the Reds, including a stoppage-time equaliser against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. Liverpool would go on to win the tie on penalties.

While Minamino certainly has had his moments, he is far from a regular at Anfield. Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are the clear first choice attackers, while Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz offer Klopp excellent options in attack. With Divock Origi also in the fray, Minamino is arguably the seventh choice attacker in the Reds’ ranks.

And the Japanese forward could be on the move in the summer, with Sevilla showing an interest. The La Liga side are enjoying a fine season and are second in the table, four points behind leaders Real Madrid. Julen Lopetegui is building a formidable side and could do with a player of Minamino’s abilities. Los Nervionenses are the lowest scorers among the top five in La Liga and could do with an infusion of quality up front.

Minamino is technically proficient and can make a difference in a pinch. A neat finisher, he is also capable of leading the line and will do well in a league where he will not be expected to showcase his physical prowess. Unlike in England, there is more room for Minamino to flex his technical ability and thrive consistently in La Liga.

The 27-year-old is aware that he is not a regular at Anfield but appears committed to the team’s cause. He has also hinted at being unsatisfied with his contributions in red so far, potentially hinting at staying put at Anfield and correcting that. Minamino is currently at his peak, and he has a difficult battle ahead of him in the efforts to become a regular at Anfield.

With better fortunes potentially awaiting him elsewhere, it remains to be seen if he will seek greener pastures. Minamino’s contract at Liverpool runs until 2024. The Asian attacker has shown himself capable of performing at the top level. Selling him for a reasonable price will not just hand the Reds funds to reinvest in a replacement but also free up a spot in their squad to bring in another foreign player.
