Fred and Alex Telles could return to the lineup when Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion face off at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Manchester United will look to bounce back to winning ways when they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Tuesday night. And Ralf Rangnick has been handed a major boost on the team news front ahead of his team’s latest fixture.
Fred is in contention to feature against Brighton after testing negative for COVID-19. In addition, Eric Bailly has resumed training after recovering from an ankle injury that was bothering him since the end of Ivory Coast’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Bailly and Fred’s return leaves Nemanja Matic (shin) and Edinson Cavani (hip) as the only players in the treatment room, while Mason Greenwood remains indefinitely suspended. During his pre-match conference, Rangnick provided an update on team news.
“Fred will be available again. He’ll also be part of the group for tomorrow. Edinson is still out, the same with Nema. The rest is, well, Alex [Telles] is back again in the squad and already was part of the group for the Southampton game and he will also be available.”
Fred and Telles should return to the starting lineup against Brighton, as Rangnick seeks some sort of spark through a few necessary changes. Fred will likely replace Paul Pogba, with the Frenchman getting a breather after prominently featuring for Manchester United following his return from a hamstring injury.
The Brazilian midfielder will line up alongside Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park. McTominay will sit at the base of the midfield unit, with Bruno Fernandes and Fred getting deployed in box-to-box roles.
As for Telles, the Brazilian international will come into the side in place of Luke Shaw, with the rest of the defensive line remaining unchanged. Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane will pair up at the heart of the Manchester United defence, with Diogo Dalot continuing as the right-back. Behind the four defenders, David de Gea is an automatic pick between the sticks.
At the opposite end of the pitch, there is no looking past Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the line for Manchester United against Brighton. Jadon Sancho should also continue on the left flank after another impressive performance. But the same cannot be said about Marcus Rashford, who will make way for Anthony Elanga on the right-wing. Rashford and Jesse Lingard will be backup attacking options for Rangnick.
Predicted Manchester United XI: de Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Telles; Bruno Fernandes, McTominay, Fred; Elanga, Ronaldo, Sancho
