Transfer News: Everton interested in signing Sergio Gomez

Everton could reportedly battle Barcelona, Manchester United and others in the race to sign Sergio Gomez in the summer.

According to a report by Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea face stiff competition from Everton in the race to sign Sergio Gomez. The Spanish defender could leave Anderlecht in the summer transfer window, with Southampton also in the running.

Sergio Gomez spent his formative years with Espanyol and Barcelona but made his first-team breakthrough in Germany after joining Borussia Dortmund in 2018. But the 21-year-old’s stint with the Bundesliga giants did not work out as envisioned, and it is only after joining Anderlecht last summer that the player has found stability in his career.

This season, the Spanish under-21 international has been in sensational form, garnering a tally of six goals and 13 assists in 35 appearances across all competitions for Anderlecht. Gomez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Barcelona, Everton, and Manchester United, setting their sights on him.

The interest from Barcelona comes in the wake of the dipping performance levels of Jordi Alba. The veteran Spanish defender has blown hot and cold for much of the last two years and needs to start getting phased out of the first-team picture. As a result, Barcelona will need to invest in a left-back in the summer, with Gomez a viable target.

As for Manchester United, it is unclear why the Red Devils would want to sign Gomez, considering they have tow quality left-backs in Luke Shaw and Alex Telles. But Telles has recently been linked with Barcelona, and his departure could prompt Manchester United to sign a left-back, making Gomez an option worth considering.

Barcelona and Manchester United now face stiff competition from Everton, where Vitaliy Mykolenko is the only natural left-back at Frank Lampard’s disposal. With the Ukrainian defender yet to settle down at Goodison Park, it is prudent of Everton to be on the lookout for another left-back, making Gomez a viable target.

Apart from Barcelona, Manchester United and Everton, Southampton and Chelsea are also keen on signing Gomez. But the report claims that Everton and Southampton have a more realistic chance of signing the 21-year-old if he leaves Anderlecht in the summer transfer window, and it will be interesting to see if a move to the Premier League materialises.
