Transfer News: Manchester United interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for English striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who could leave Everton in the summer.

According to a report by The Sun, Manchester United’s priority for the summer transfer window is to sign a striker. To that end, the Red Devils have drawn up a shortlist of four centre-forwards to pursue ahead of the 2022/23 season, with Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin one of the players on that shortlist.

Manchester United might have faced defeat just once since Ralf Rangnick took over, but the interim boss has papered over many cracks thus far. The Red Devils’ struggles in the final third have not disappeared into thin air, even though their chance-creation has improved significantly.

The Premier League heavyweights have scored two or more goals in just three of their 12 matches since Rangnick took over the reins from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With Cristiano Ronaldo in the twilight of his storied career and Edinson Cavani entering the final six months of his contract, Manchester United will need to invest in a striker in the summer transfer window.

To make matters more concerning for Manchester United, Ronaldo has been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain. At the same time, Cavani is a target for a gamut of clubs, with a lot of interest stemming from South America. The Uruguayan striker has emerged on the radars of River Plate and Boca Juniors and could leave Manchester United as a free agent.

The Red Devils thus need to sign a striker in the summer transfer window to take over from Ronaldo and Cavani in due course. To that end, Manchester United will primarily target four centre-forwards ahead of the 2022/23 season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin one of these options.

Calvert-Lewin is enduring an injury-riddled 2021/22 season that has restricted him to just six outings in all competitions thus far for Everton, in which he has chipped in with three goals. But that has done nothing to detract possible suitors, with the English international still widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

Manchester United will have to be wary of competition from fellow Premier League clubs, with Arsenal also keen on signing the Everton striker. Apart from Calvert-Lewin, Manchester United will also target Lautaro Martinez, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane. But before the transfer window reopens in the summer, the Red Devils will be determined to clinch a top-four finish to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
