Transfer News: Liverpool interested in Jacob Ramsey

Liverpool have reportedly expressed interest in Aston Villa youngster Jacob Ramsey, who is rated highly by coach Jurgen Klopp.

A recent report from Fichajes has offered an update on Liverpool’s policy after the end of the season. The Premier League giants are bracing themselves for a summer of change, with coach Jurgen Klopp particularly keen on adding reinforcements in the midfield department.

One of the players Liverpool are closely looking at is Jacob Ramsey. The Aston Villa youngster is rated highly by Klopp, who is looking to build the core of the future Liverpool team, having also targeted Fulham starlet Fabio Carvalho on a free transfer.

A product of the Aston Villa youth academy, Ramsey has become one of the most in-demand prospects in the Premier League after making his breakthrough last season. He had racked up 22 league appearances for the club, and the subsequent exit of Jack Grealish in the summer had opened the door for him to become a crucial first-team option for the team.

In 20 league appearances this season, Ramsey has scored five goals while mustering an assist. A central midfielder by trade, the 20-year-old has impressed the onlookers with his creativity in the middle of the park, coupled with his aggression and dynamism going forward – making him an asset for Aston Villa.

Ramsey’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Liverpool among the clubs keen on securing his services. As mentioned earlier, the Reds have identified the Aston Villa midfielder as a potential replacement for Wijnaldum, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has not convinced Jurgen Klopp.

The likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are also heading towards the final phase of their respective careers, while there are concerns over the long-term future of Naby Keita. The Guinean was notably linked with a move to Barcelona and West Ham United last month, and it won’t be surprising to see him depart Anfield in the summer.

It has prompted Liverpool to enter the market for someone like Jacob Ramsey. Although the player lacks experience at the highest level of football, Klopp believes he has what it takes to become an asset for the Reds in the long term and eventually become an ideal replacement for Wijnaldum.

However, the 20-year-old does have a long-term contract with Aston Villa, which, combined with his age profile and potential, could cost Liverpool a fortune. So it will be interesting to see whether the Reds plan to move on or dig deep in their pursuit of Jacob Ramsey in the summer.
