Transfer News: PSG lead Real Madrid in race to sign Franck Kessie

Real Madrid will have an uphill task in landing Franck Kessie, with PSG reportedly leading the race to sign the 25-year-old AC Milan midfielder.

According to a report by Spanish publication AS, the race to sign Franck Kessie is heating up, with Paris Saint-Germain in pole position to secure his services. The 25-year-old AC Milan midfield powerhouse is also a target for Real Madrid.

Franck Kessie has evolved into a powerhouse of a midfielder since joining AC Milan from Atalanta. The Rossoneri initially signed the Ivory Coast international on loan in 2017 before he made a permanent switch to San Siro in July 2019. Over the last four and a half years, the player has gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as one of the best players in Serie A.

To date, the 25-year-old has made 205 appearances for AC Milan, chipping in with 35 goals and 16 assists in the process. But the Serie A giants are in a spot of bother over Kessie’s long-term future as he has entered the final six months of his contract, with a renewal nowhere in sight. Kessie’s situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, including PSG and Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid comes in the wake of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos’s advancing years. While the two ageing stalwarts will likely last another season at the very least, Real Madrid will still need to make a midfield reinforcement, as Dani Ceballos and Isco should depart the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.

Kessie is thus a viable target for Real Madrid, with the 25-year-old also potentially being an alternative for Casemiro if signed. But the Spanish giants face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign the AC Milan midfield powerhouse.

The Ligue 1 heavyweights are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign the Ivorian, who could be a long-term replacement for Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye. With both the midfielders on the wrong side of 30, PSG will need to bring in at least one replacement, especially with Georginio Wijnaldum flattering to deceive since arriving from Liverpool last summer.

According to AS, Real Madrid will have an uphill task in the race to sign Kessie, with PSG in pole position. Such a development also comes as a surprise as recent reports had claimed that the AC Milan midfielder had reached a verbal agreement with Barcelona. So it will be interesting to see which way the pendulum swings as we approach the summer transfer window.
