Transfer News: Liverpool fail with approach for Matheus Cunha

Premier League giants Liverpool have failed in a bid to land Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha in January.

According to AS, Premier League giants Liverpool have been knocked back in their efforts to land Atletico Madrid star Matheus Cunha in the final days of the January transfer window.

The Reds are making smart moves towards the end of the winter transfer window, especially when it comes to attacking reinforcements. They are close to landing Porto winger Luis Diaz and have made a beeline for Atletico’s Cunha.

Jurgen Klopp appears to be a fan of the Brazilian forward and gave his blessings for the Merseysiders to launch an official bid. Atletico view the 22-year-old as a major player in the years to come and promptly dismissed the interest. The Spanish giants might have warded off the Reds for now, but it remains to be seen if the Premier League side will make a renewed effort next summer.

The Brazilian international is a player of excellent potential and has shown glimpses of his ability at the Wanda Metropolitano. He joined the defending Spanish champions in 2021 and has since made 23 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and assisting two more. While the numbers might not appear too prolific, he has shown enough to suggest that he can turn into a leading forward in the future.

Cunha has already played at Anfield, given that Liverpool and Atletico were drawn together in the UEFA Champions League group stage. It would appear that the Reds liked what they saw of the Brazilian, and it was enough for them to make their move this month.

Liverpool have primarily used Roberto Firmino up front when available this season. While Diogo Jota has done well as a stand-in, the Reds will do well to bring in another centre-forward next summer. It could be something in the works given their interest in Cunha and Jurgen Klopp’s recent comments on Gabriel Martinelli.

An excellent dribbler who is always on the move, Cunha is a tailor-made forward for Jurgen Klopp’s system. His technical ability, coupled with his link-up play in the final third makes the Brazilian forward a sought-after player. He is also proficient at set-pieces and has the intelligence to thrive at Anfield.

The Reds’ front three are ageing, and everyone except Mohamed Salah has lost the magic touch that made them nigh on unplayable at their peak. The upcoming summer transfer window could be key in shaping Liverpool’s future for the next few years. Whether this involves making an all-out assault to land Cunha remains to be seen.
