Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been approached by Bayern Munich over a possible move in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are accelerating their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. The Bavarian giants wish to sign the Barcelona midfielder in the ongoing transfer window and have already approached his representatives.
Frenkie de Jong has continued on an upward trajectory since joining Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. While his stint at Camp Nou has coincided with one of Barcelona’s worst phases in modern history, the Dutch international has only gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as a key figure for the Blaugrana.
To date, the 24-year-old has made 119 appearances for Barcelona while chipping in with 11 goals and 14 assists in the process. But de Jong faces an uncertain future at Barcelona despite being a consistent performer. Amid their financial crisis, the Catalan giants are reportedly considering selling the player to balance their books and fund major transfers, with the situation capturing the attention of Bayern Munich.
The interest from Bayern Munich might be a little surprising, considering the presence of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Marcel Sabitzer. But with Corentin Tolisso likely to depart the Allianz Arena as a free agent, the Bundesliga heavyweights will need to enter the market for a long-term replacement.
Interestingly, Tolisso is a target for Barcelona, who could be battling Real Madrid in the race to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer in the summer. As for Bayern Munich, the Bavarian giants could have a major upgrade on Tolisso on their hands if de Jong arrives from Barcelona.
The German champions are now set to step up their efforts to sign de Jong, having already contacted his representatives. Bayern Munich’s plan is to accelerate the pursuit of the Dutchman by signing him in the January transfer window.
But a move will be difficult to pull off, with recent reports claiming that the relations between Barcelona and Bayern Munich have soured. The development comes in the wake of Die Roten’s approach for Pedri.
On the other hand, Bayern prodigy Gabriel Vidovic has recently emerged on Barcelona’s radar. So Bayern Munich will have an uphill task convincing Barcelona to sell de Jong to them, especially with the 24-year-old having plenty of other suitors.
